A Southern Pacific fireman risks his own life in Oakland to save two young girls playing on the railroad tracks. While the engineer applies the emergency brakes, fireman Ralph Lovelace climbs onto the engine's cowcatcher and shoves a six-year old out of harm's way before grabbing her four-year-old sister into his arms. A poodle becomes a tragic pawn in a battle between the dog's owner and a doctor who says he wasn't paid for his services. Because of its valuable pedigree, authorities hold the dog in the women's section of the City Prison until the dispute can be clarified. The prison cat, however, unhappy with the dog's presence, savagely attacks it. The dog dies the next day of its injuries. Sept. 5
Oakland's Fung Joe Guey makes the first successful flight of a heavier-than-air motor-driven airplane on the West Coast, flying a big bi-plane a half-mile some 15-feet above a grassy knoll at Piedmont Heights. The flight ends when drive train screws break under the strain. Sept. 23
Because of a continuing fare battle between two West Coast steamship lines, it has become cheaper to take a cruise from Los Angeles to San Francisco than it is to stay at home: The West Coast Line is offering a rate of $1 for a stateroom, meals included, undercutting rival Pacific Coast Steamship Company.
