James S. Ricard, director of the observatory at the University of Santa Clara, announces that after 13 years of research his team can predict the arrival of Pacific Coast storms up to 40 days in advance. He admits, however, that he can't predict where the storms make landfall. — Jan. 7

With World War I just under way, two German cruisers, the Nurnberg and Leipzig, ply the waters near the Farallon Islands in search of ships carrying contraband war materials. Two U.S. Navy cruisers keep an eye on the German vessels as three British warships and two submarines, along with a French cruiser, are en route to the area —and expected to do battle with the Germans. — Aug. 12
