In a new traffic program aimed at eventual elimination of all traffic signal bells, the city yesterday began disconnecting the "stop" bells at intersections in the downtown district bounded by Market, California and Taylor Streets. Members of the traffic advisory board say the stop bell causes accidents: The minute it rings to stop traffic in one direction, the line of cars waiting to proceed is inclined to get under way, before the automatic signal changes. — Jan. 29

Blast levels Port Chicago, causes massive loss of life: Naval authorities announced late yesterday that the toll of dead from the explosion of two ammunition freighters at Port Chicago had risen to 322 men and possibly will reach 372. In addition, the Nation's worst wartime disaster injured approximately 500 men, women and children, of whom an estimated 200 were military personnel. About fifty of these were injured seriously.
