Alaska becomes 49th state; seven-by-seven star arrangement for new flag unveiled: A pair of sevens and a lucky star put two local flag manufacturers into big production. By noon the first official flags were on display at the Emerson Manufacturing Co. at 21 Hawthorne St. and the Paramount Flag Co. at 33 Fremont St. — Jan. 4

A Detroit industry task force told Governor Edmund G. Brown and a joint session of the Legislature that automobile manufacturers, after five years' research "now know how to reduce substantially" smog producing vehicle exhaust gas emissions. However, they said smog suppressing exhaust devices are still not perfected and that corralling the problem ......... will be extremely expensive. — Feb. 16

A new state regulation requires a daily pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States in all public schools, the San Francisco Board of Education was told. — May 19

Among its other duties the Board of Supervisors will have the pleasant task of formally accepting a $2,000,000 gift from industrialist Walter S. Johnson to help rebuild the Palace of Fine Arts. — June 1

A staff psychiatrist at the State Hospital in Napa is arrested on charges of running an abortion mill in Boyes Springs. — June 9

Robert F. Stroud, the "Birdman of Alcatraz," was transferred to the Federal Medical Center at Springfield, July 13, the Examiner learned. The transfer ended 42 years of solitary confinement for the 69-year-old Stroud, who became a world authority on bird diseases while conducting experiments on canaries. — July 21

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev visits San Francisco, takes Bay cruise, strolls along California Street, talks with Longshoremen's Union leader Harry Bridges, visits IBM computer plant in South Bay and Stonestown Shopping Center (marveling at the supermarket), declares San Francisco the "most beautiful" American city, but declines offer to buy a lot: "I can't do that," the pudgy Soviet boss replies. "I'd be expelled from the party." — Sept. 22

Mayoral candidate Russell Wolden accuses incumbent opponent George Christopher of heading an administration under which "San Francisco has become the national headquarters of organized sex deviates in the United States." — Oct. 8

Mayor George Christopher was swept into another four year term in office by an overwhelming vote margin over Assessor Russel L. Wolden. — Nov. 4

Police Chief Thomas Cahill, after an investigation into "girlie" magazines sold here, personally thinks certain of them are "despicable." But under existing law, he is powerless to proceed against them. Cahill disclosed this yesterday, as he declined to go along with certain other Bay area cities which have banned the new issue of Playboy magazine. — Nov. 11
