Lim Fung, a San Francisco laborer, is arrested for having lottery tickets. On the way to jail, he eats the tickets to be rid of the evidence, but soon falls ill. Taken to a hospital, the "masticated papier-mâché was removed," after which it was determined one of the tickets was a winner worth $90. It was unclear, however, if or how Fung would claim his prize. — Jan. 1

Part of a crime wave against train companies, a mysterious gang blamed for several recent rail accidents writes letters to Southern Pacific demanding $10,000 in ransom. Armed men patrol 500 miles of track and a man opens fire on police near Madera when he is interrupted while laying dynamite. — Jan. 29

The hottest day ever recorded in San Francisco hits 100.2 degrees. But Alexander McAdie, district weather forecaster for the U.S. Weather Bureau, "warns the public here to beware of a sudden drop of temperature today, and not to leave wraps too far behind." — Sept. 8

"The most exclusive, fashionable and wealthy club of women in Alameda county" is threatened by "revolution" after most of its members — Christian Science followers — are ordered by that church's leader, Mary Baker Eddy, to quit any organization which does not accept both women and men. — Oct. 8
