Buffeted by ferry boat wakes and strong tides, Nellie Schmidt of Alameda becomes the first woman and the third person to swim across the Bay, crossing from the Vallejo Street wharf to Oakland in three hours, six minutes. Schmidt is fed milk during her eight-mile journey and coached by F.M. Riehl, 70, the first man to swim across the Bay, back in 1872. Aug. 12
A fire sweeps through the Benicia Arsenal, and explosions can be felt for miles around. An estimated $3 million in explosives and ammunition is lost, but there are no deaths or injuries. Oct. 19
