Marin County's still unnamed 1950 grand jury will be asked to investigate charges of brutality, favoritism and "fixed tickets" brought against Sausalito Police Chief James Doyle. Jan. 9
There will be no segregation because of race, creed or color in San Francisco's projected 3,000-unit low cost housing development. However, the existing "neighborhood pattern" policy will be continued in 3,000 units completed or planned for early construction. Feb. 21
Mayor Elmer Robinson's "Write a Letter to the Mayor Week" got off to a flying start a week ahead of schedule. Sixty-four San Franciscans, apparently with an idea that their pet gripes would explode if kept on ice another seven days, jumped the gun with their suggestions, much to the mayor's satisfaction. Eighteen of the forty-six complaints were transit improvement suggestions. Other complaints ranged from a plan for re-gilding the dome of City Hall to settling the dust at San Francisco Airport. Eight men and four women of an American jury decided that Harry Bridges is a Communist, and has been for sixteen years. They found the longshore union chief guilty of criminal acts of perjury and conspiracy committed to conceal his secret Communist Party membership and thus fraudulently to obtain American citizenship. ......... The verdict strips away Australian-born Bridges' American citizenship. The maximum penalty is seven years in a federal prison and a $15,000 fine. Defense attorney Vincent Hallinan is sentenced to six months for contempt. April 5
Glide Memorial Methodist Church will join with thousands of of churches in this country and around the world, tomorrow, in observing "Peace Sunday." The observance commemorates the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima five years ago. In light of the fighting in Korea, the day will be marked by prayer, Holy Communion, and sermons on peace that also emphasize the need for the United Nations and world government. Aug. 5
A plaque marking the site at Montgomery and Washington streets where the first Jewish religious services were held in San Francisco 101 years ago will be dedicated there at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Members of the group that met there later founded Congregations Emanu-el and Sherith Israel, both of which are now celebrating their centennials. Sept. 5
Estimated 300,000 view California centennial parade: Down Market Street, the strains of "California, Here I Come!" became louder and louder as a police band in khakis cut loose and now the parade was really on, six hours of pageantry and music and color the whole golden history of a Golden State on its 100th birthday.
