A new plan for the mass evacuation of San Francisco's nearly 1,000,000 persons on a "yellow alert" (meaning H-bomb or A-bomb attack is probable) is announced. The movement of San Franciscans would be north and south" rather than to Oakland, because of the probability of similar traffic problems there. — April 22

An invaluable painting was stolen from a gallery crowded with visitors at the M.H. De Young Museum, in Golden Gate Park. The painting, a miniature, "Archduke Albert of Austria," is believed by many authorities to be the work of Peter Paul Rubens. — July 18
